This month, we’re spotlighting @simonrobinson, a Senior Exploration Geologist based in Otago, New Zealand, with experience across underground and open-pit production, resource estimation, and exploration projects around the world - including Australia, PNG, Morocco, and Saudi Arabia.
What he works on
Simon focuses on exploration and geological modelling, with a particular interest in finding new value in historic datasets. He’s been using Leapfrog Geo almost daily since 2015 to bring geological data together and generate new targets.
Tools he uses
Leapfrog Geo for wireframing narrow-vein mineralisation, building lithology models, and developing indicator models for target generation.
He’s also increasingly using Evo and Driver as they expand what’s possible in his modelling and analysis workflows.
What he finds most interesting
Recently, Simon has been using Driver on grade-control data to uncover subtle trends that may not have been recognised at the time—and then projecting those trends outward to support broader exploration targeting.
A tip for fellow community members
When building wireframing and estimation workflows, Simon recommends creating separate projects for wireframing and estimation and linking them through Central. This creates a natural validation step and helps maintain clarity across the workflow.
What sparked his interest in geoscience
Growing up in **New Zealand - essentially one large geological outcrop - **spending time in the mountains made geology feel like a natural path.
Fun fact
When he’s not untangling geological puzzles, Simon is getting tangled up in jiu jitsu - and recently earned his blue belt.
