Element thickness in Slope/W

Hello,

It seems that I have a misunderstanding of the purpose of element thickness in geostudio 2024.2.1.

When I edit the element thickness at the geometry parent level in the "define projects", I assumed that it is referring to the thickness of the cross section drawn "into the page". I was thinking this would be useful where I wanted to, say, quickly evaluate a retaining wall's slope stability when a point load is applied in the middle of it.

This doesn't seem to have the effect I want, as element thickness does not change FoS results when a point load is applie on the retained soil.

Either I'm applying element thickness incorrectly, or I'm misinterpreting point loads? Are point loads really line loads going into the page, with a value of load/ft?

happy to send over a file, but it appears to be blocked in this forum

Any help would be much appreciated! Thank you!

  • Hi @ChristopherAnichiniS, yes point loads are line loads going into the page. The 2D nature of GeoStudio does not allow for the consideration of a singular point load. The scenario you're referring to would require a 3D model.
