Meet Franck Igor Bapooh, Geophysicist at SONAMINES

PrachiChitkara

This month, we’re heading to Yaoundé, Cameroon to meet Franck Igor Bapooh, a Geophysicist at SONAMINES, the National Mining Corporation of Cameroon.

Franck works in applied geophysics for mineral exploration, with a focus on interpreting geophysical data and helping evaluate mineral exploration opportunities.

He’s particularly interested in projects that bring together magnetic, gravity, electrical and geological datasets. For Franck, one of the most interesting challenges is taking complex - and sometimes incomplete - data and turning it into geological interpretations that can help identify and prioritise exploration targets.

Exploring 3D geological modelling

Franck is currently building his knowledge of Leapfrog Geo and Oasis montaj, with a particular interest in how geological and geophysical data can be brought together to support 3D modelling and mineral exploration.

One lesson he’d share with other Community members is to start with the geological objective rather than the tool:

“Geophysical data should not be interpreted in isolation. Integrating different datasets and checking whether the results are geologically consistent can lead to more reliable interpretations.”

What sparked his interest in geoscience?

For Franck, it started with curiosity about what lies beneath the Earth’s surface.

He was drawn to geophysics because it provides a way to investigate the subsurface using physical measurements and mathematical methods - helping us better understand geological structures and guide mineral exploration.

Outside of his day-to-day work, Franck enjoys learning new technical tools and exploring how data analysis and emerging technologies, including AI, could improve geophysical interpretation and mineral exploration workflows.

Thanks for sharing your story with us, we’re glad to have you as part of the Seequent Community! @BAYEGUIIgor
