Time-lapse inversion in RES2DINV – Using T0 baseline model as initial model for T+1 inversion?
Hello everyone,
I would like to perform a time-lapse data inversion using the double difference method described by Bretaudeau et al. 2021 (https://doi.org/10.1093/gji/ggab172) with RES2DINV.
To do this, I would like to import the resistivity model from the T0 (baseline) data inversion as the initial model for the T+1 data inversion. Is this possible with RES2DINV? If so, how?
Thank you in advance.
Angélie.

Hi Angélie
Unfortunately, it is not possible in RES2DINV to import the inversion result from the baseline survey (T0) as the starting model for the inversion of a later time step (T+1).
However, it is worth noting that the time-lapse inversion in RES2DINV already links the datasets together by default. The inversion is therefore not performed completely independently for each time step. Instead, the time-lapse algorithm is designed to highlight changes relative to the baseline model while maintaining consistency between the models.
Depending on your specific objective, it may be possible to achieve a similar effect by using fixed regions or other model constraints, although this would not be equivalent to directly using the T0 inversion result as the starting model for T+1, and to be honest we are not sure how well it will actually work.
