We are delighted to announce the publication of an RFC that discusses the creation of a new geoscience object schema for drilling campaigns!

Check out a brief summary of the RFC below.

Title: Drilling Campaign Schema
Author: Tim Schurr

Summary

A Drilling Campaign stores data about the whole lifecycle of planning and drilling exploratory drillholes. This includes the planned portion, any predicted geological intervals given the planned hole trajectory and interim field results that enable live drilling workflows.

Planned drillholes are a set of parametric data which describes the pathway (drillhole trajectory) for a drillhole to take to reach a given target for geologic sampling at depth. Planned drillholes can be from surface or underground, downwards, upwards or laterally. When underground drillholes are typically a fan of multiple paths from a single collar point.

Planned Drillholes are grouped by the phase in a wider drilling programme, we call this a Drilling Campaign. These can contain a few holes or up to many 1000’s of holes. Planned drillholes are stored non-desurveyed (i.e., parametrically).

Predicted geological information ("Drillhole Prognoses") are available alongside the planned drillhole to aid drilling teams in planning and operating the drilling operation, and for comparison with field results.

Interim results are able to be added to a Drilling Campaign object to capture partial or complete field data prior to analysis in a drilling system of record. This enables live drilling workflows, including enabling Evo to act as a convergence point for drilling service providers and makers of drillhole planning software.

Motivation

Planned drilling is the top object exported out of Leapfrog Geo. A large volume of data is exported in CSV format, which makes the workflow complex and painful for geoscientists. Adding a planned drilling object type to Evo supports partners and users to streamline that workflow and add auditing, governance, workflow management, etc.

Seequent will begin by intentionally serving the needs of mining users. Energy and Civil drillhole planning use cases will be served through updates to the schema in other phases.
